Dr John McDade questions the nature of modern unbelief. He sees is as generated from within an approach to the question of God which grew up among Christian theologians in the early modern period. In seeking a description of God that avoided the vision of God found in Christian culture, it produced a deism - and had such a clear understanding of ‘God’ that it could be ‘certain’ of its ‘belief’ that it could be equally certain of its unbelief. McDade contrasts this with the traditional Christian approach that God is always beyond human understanding and conceptualisation.
