Footwashing has been part of the ritual inheritance of Christians since at least the time John composed his gospel, but it has also been a much misunderstood and avoided ritual. Here Thomas O’Loughlin looks at the ritual, its origins, and how it has been used and abused down the centuries, and argues that in John’s gospel it is an action to be engaged in by the disciples so that they can model thought the activity the relationship that should exist between them as disciples and friends.
