Dr John McDade explores Friedrich Nietzsche’s (1844-1900) notion of a ‘ladder of cruelty’ within the development of religion. McDade argues that this is, in some way, a secular version of Augustine’s notion of ‘Original Sin’ – and that theologians need to keep this darker side of humanity in mind while they work.
