A look behind the music of a special gala concert with the University of Nottingham Philharmonia and Choir joined by guest musicians from Zhejiang Conservatory of Music in China.
The concert opened with Li Huanzhi’s Spring Festival Overture often performed at Chinese New Year festivities.
It was followed with Rachmaninov’s The Bells. Based on a Russian poem adapted from Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem of the same name, the piece evokes bells marking the passage of life.
The concern closed with a performance of Holst’s The Planets, which ascribes an astrological character to each of the known planets conveying a metaphorical progression of life from the physical to the mystical.
