Taster Lecture on Statistics with Lisa Mott

This is a recording of one of the Maths Taster Sessions that we are running for anyone who wants to see what a maths lecture at university is like. These sessions should be particularly useful for students who are thinking of applying to study maths at university.

This session will give you a taste of what a university lecture on Statistics is like. We will consider a range of problems in statistics and common misconceptions when solving these. In particular, we will look at extrapolation and its limitations and some uses of the normal distribution. You will have the opportunity to have a go at solving some statistics problems yourself and to vote on answers.

This talk is suitable for students taking A-level mathematics and some familiarity with the sample mean and sample variance is assumed.

Lisa Mott is a Teaching Associate in the School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Nottingham.

She has previously taught the second-year service module Applied Statistics and Probability, and she currently teaches Probability and Statistics on the Degree Apprenticeship in Data Science.

Lisa is interested in digital learning, and she encourages and supports the development of a digital learning strategy within the school in her current role as Digital Learning Lead.
