Sparta Live! "My Queen!": The reception of Gorgo in 300 (2006) and 300: Rise of an Empire (2014)

Join us and Carl Buckland for a discussion about the reception of Gorgo in 300 (2006) and 300: Rise of an Empire (2014).

Gorgo was seen as an exceptional woman in the ancient world and she astounded Herodotus with her brilliance. This webinar considers how she has been translated onto the silver screen of the 21st century in the film adaptations of Frank Miller’s controversial comic books 300 (1998) and Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander (2018). In both comics, Gorgo plays an incredibly minor role, and yet her adaptation to the screen, played by Lena Headey, sees her as vital to the films’ plots and to their great successes at the box office.

Dr Carl Buckland will discuss her importance in the films and the importance of portraying ancient women in modern cinema.
