Since 2005, the Engineering Faculty has been developing systems to harvest renewable energy in the form of compressed air, and storing that air as necessary. This opens up the possibility of a 100%-renewable-powered UK. Our mechanical engineers have invented Integral Compression Wind Turbines (ICWTs), which form the centrepiece of future compressed air systems and have the potential to deliver output energy at much lower cost than conventional machines.
