We describe the role of Einstein's theory of gravitation, the general theory of relativity, as an essential part of the everyday technology that keeps satellite navigation systems running. We also discuss why general relativity should be replaced by a better, and presumably quantised, theory of gravitation in extreme circumstances, such as those that occur inside black holes and those that occurred in the very early universe.
