This module seeks to explain revolutionary change in Cuba since 1959 through an examination of the roles of culture and ideology. Adopting both a chronological and a thematic approach, the module will focus on the critical factors which determined the original rebellion and subsequent revolution, taking the 'story' up to the present day; it will include an examination of the role of, and policies for, culture and cultural participation in creating a sense of national identity after 1959; and it will examine the extent to, and ways in, which a 'cultural revolution' was fundamental to the socialisation process within the Revolution; it will explore particular cultural forms in order to illustrate policy. Critical questions such as the processes of social and cultural revolution, the process of ideological definition and redefinition, the extent and nature of political participation and dissent, and the continuing significance of Cuba's self-definition within the external environment will all be addressed within a module whose discipline framework and approach is both cultural and historical.
