MLAC2158 Contemporary Translation Studies
From Sarah Woodcock on March 3rd, 2020
This module introduces students to the theories which have developed over the past forty or fifty years in the field of Translation Studies, such as equivalence and domestication/foreignisation, and gives them the tools to apply these theories in their own translation practice. The module consists of a weekly lecture which focusses on introducing the translation theory at hand and a weekly seminar in which we try to apply the theory to different kinds of text - ranging from informative texts (news reports/press releases), through expressive texts (poems, novels), to operative texts (adverts). The highlight of the series of seminars is the Disney seminar, examining how songs, such as Let It Go, have been translated and encouraging students to reflect on what the translators have done in their practice.
