Professor Tom O’Loughlin looks at the name ‘Jesus Christ.’ Most people think this is just a forename-plus-surname and hence we speak of ‘what Christ said’ or the ‘time of Christ.’ But the name of the man in Galilee was ‘Jesus of Nazareth’ and the use of the word ‘Christ’ (the Greek word ‘christos’ means ‘anointed’) is a theological assertion by his followers: Jesus is the Christ, Jesus is the Chosen of God, Jesus is the anointed one of the Father. So the more correct form is ‘Jesus is the Christ.’ But the key point to remember is that this use of a name-plus-title is a religious declaration by his disciples of their belief.
